Roma and John’s kitchen in Anjuna

February 5, 2016 by Edlyn

Chutney1Collage1Collage2Processed with VSCO

Romaldin made this green chutney for lunch at her house this Wednesday. From the time we got there, she kept saying she smelt something burning. Finally, she remembered that she had put two onions into the burning embers of the stove they built outside. Her mother-in-law is the one who uses that stove the most, either to cook rice or boil water. You are required to squat right to the ground to be able to cook and even in her late 60s, she does it with ease.

The smokey onions were going to be used in the green chutney along with lightly blistered green chillies (that she fried at the same time as the fish), garlic, tamarind, fresh coconut, pepper, cilantro and some salt and sugar. All of these ingredients are ground in a high-speed mixer with the help of some water.

This is her kitchen and it’s the start of my goal to document stories from real kitchens while I’m still in Goa. I guess I am a bit jaded by the Pinterest-style photos that make up the majority of what we see everyday while interacting with each other online. I’m not against it but I want to be able to share this whole other side that goes unnoticed. There are some really amazing homecooks who just don’t care to have a perfect kitchen – just a functional one. I love that.

I have another story for another day but I’ll need to work on getting Romaldin’s secret recipe to bring it all together. Till then, here are some images from that day in her kitchen and brilliant ideas to bring to your own space.

The last photo is by Jane.

PS: If you’re in Goa, she rents out three cute rooms in Anjuna. She and her husband are brilliant cooks (she’s a homecook and he is a professional) and always use the best ingredients in their food.

Muddy paws. Muddy feet. Wet paws. Wet feet. Peanut butter sandwiches. Fallen tree bridges. Mossy trees. Tiny water springs.

Smelly socks.

Dog baths.

Human soul cleanse.

Yes, I like the beach more but for now, this will do.

This was two Saturdays ago

August 8, 2012 by Edlyn

My real name is Bad Blogger D’Souza. I know I’m supposed to post these things “as.and.when.they.happen”, but I fail sometimes.

Not to worry because I did make a blueberry cheesecake and I’m willing to share the recipe with you for one night only. I mean forever. Forever and ever.

Img_20120729_072323

So last last Saturday, we were visited by the in-laws (mine, not his) and we all drove down to Shelton, about 2 hours away from home. We took the happy dogs along since they love the outdoors and went on our way to visit my person’s dad’s cousins Jacque and Glen.

Saying that they have a cute house that I want is more than I want to say. I want a cozy house like that with a bathtub garden, and a huge lawn with a well in the middle and berries that you can pick and snack on while you garden. Sigh.

They also have bees.

Bees live here

This is le bathtub garden. Angels watch over it because it’s so heavenly.

It’s all very whimsical to me. You can’t blame me for getting carried away. I’ve only seen these kinds of places in my dreams or in Hallmark movies. I love it!

We ate good, home-cooked and mostly homegrown meals and my cheesecake (I haven’t forgotten the recipe!), played with the dogs and just enjoyed the weekend. My person and I had to stay in a creepy motel room but breakfast the next day made up for it.

Oh, I forgot about Dos! He’s their 13-year-old Jack Russel Terrier. He could be 14 too, but deep down he’s still a baby. The dogs thought he was their new horsing around friend and Dos did try too. Poor boy, they really wore him out.

Okay so, I know you only waited this long for the cheesecake recipe. I honour your bravery.

This is the recipe I go back to time and time again because it’s delicious and you can make it with almost any fruit because the fruit is only the topping. BBC Good Food, I’m still working on perfecting this recipe, but boy is it amazing!

Ah, the sweet side of life.

Say Wat?!

After a slow first day where I just stuffed my face and couldn’t walk anymore, May 10th in Bangkok was fun.

Walking, we more than made up for today. We spent a lot of time looking for China Town in the morning. Thankfully, a kind inquisitive stranger named Malisa went “That is king”, while we were looking at a picture of Thailand’s ruling monarch. She proceeded to tell us we were doing it all wrong (China Town opens only after 6) and went on to draw us a line along the river we were supposed to go on. Awesome! She was so excited that her’s and Melissa’s names were (almost) the same. Oh yes, I was just Edlyn in the corner.

The ride along the river was wonderful. Their houses are on stilts and they mostly all have sit out areas. Pretty sweet deal.

Here is a picture from the day that was.

(I don’t know what is with that smudge in the bottom left corner. Cool temple, so ignore it)

People in Thailand walk around with bags of cool drinks, which may sometimes be confused with giant bags of movable pee. You thought it, I said it.

Trust me, it was a good idea when I took it.

What is with my hair, you ask. Beaches do strange things to this Goan.

Useful pearls of wisdom: We stayed at Khaosan Baan Thai in Bangkok. It’s a cute little hostel, run by a family that never stops smiling. They serve a complimentary breakfast every morning (not vegetarian) and it’s the happiest looking thing (refer to my next post on food).

The easiest way to get here is to take the metro from Suvarnabhumi Airport and get off at Phaya Thai station. From there you can take a tuk-tuk (hard to bargain because they know that it’s where all the newbie tourists wait. A better option is to take a taxi and insist that you want to go by the meter. Don’t get in unless he says okay. The taxis are different colour but they all have the same fares. The hostel is about 10 minutes away from Khaosan Road, the overhyped tourist ghetto, where everyone goes after dark.

If you’re in Bangkok for a short time and feel that you must go to a Thai beach, Koh Samet is your answer. The entire journey is around 4 hours long. Take a taxi to the bus station, which we thought was fairly long and that the taxi driver was ripping us off. However, that’s just the way the Eastern Bus Terminal rolls. The ticket window is right at the entrance in a little glass cubicle. Buy a ticket, wait for your mini van to arrive and then go go go!

I’ve said enough. Now you go love Thailand long time.

Collecting the pictures took some time but I had a lot of fun reeling you in. I also think I want to do this again. If you have a photograph taken on your Sunday, email it to me at eeekster@gmail.com. All I need is your first name and location. If you have a website or blog you’d like to share, send the URL too.

So maybe your Sunday wasn’t at a block party in Rio or catching the next train to work. But you were happy that it was yours and that makes it perfect.

Sunday kind of love

February 13, 2012 by Edlyn

As a Goan, I know the importance of a Sunday. Nothing says big meals, family and idyllic lazy days like this one. Some of us even have go to work (dang!)!! It does make me not dread Mondays though, like a lot of people.

I thought I would put together a collection of photos with the help of old friends and new ones I love from all over the world. All were taken on February 12, 2012.

As I’m awaiting some pictures to be sent in, I’m gonna post my favourite Sunday picture from yesterday.

Saturday night keedas

February 12, 2012 by Edlyn

Most of you who understand the cursed life of a journalist will know the equally cursed hours we overwork. Fun? Thou shall have NONE. Zero. Now go back to your corner and don’t let me catch you kerning any more than 5!

Lamebook.

You see, we are rebels. We don’t let our work life run our positive, vivacious spirits. So while we may work till oh…1 am, we make sure we don’t sleep till 5.

What do we do till then?

This!

P146

(Mushroom pizza)

And this

P145

(Peanut, butter and Delhi)

We make fun of this

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdiPbiTPVV0?wmode=transparent]

And when we’re done, we look for beer. When we can’t find it, we look for ocean.

We mostly always find it. Even if it’s too dark to see.

We feel it.

(The Ingo’s Saturday Night Bazaar  is a wonderful experience to have if you’re in Goa. This is one of the two night markets in Goa and it is the more popular one. It’s run by Ingo Grill in Arpora. http://www.ingosbazaar.com/ is the link to the website if you want to go there, have a stall there, or just go listen to the music, shop and taste some yummy, but overpriced, food)

I went to Bangalore on a Sunday. There was a concert to be watched that day and it was gewd. But if I must pick my favourite part, it would be all that zipping through traffic on a two-wheeler, eating the best of some local foods (one of which I named my cat after), seeing Saurabh, talking to Rakshit (who is just an almost silhouette in this picture) and almost missing my flight but not missing it.

It’s a great city with wonderful weather.

I’d like to go back.
